Pets Sitter Selection

1pets | Tips | Sunday, 29 June 2008

It is inevitable that you will have to eventually leave your little friend at home for a few days. You will have to take the time to choose a good pet sitter for them if you want your pets to be happy. You would probably do well to see if anyone you know is interested in helping or if they can at least recommend someone. At worst you can always check the yellow pages for a service.
When you are looking you need to see if they are considered to be reliable. They will need to show up at the right times and do what needs to be done. Your pet has a set schedule for happy eating and they also probably have a schedule for when to go outside. You don’t want a sitter to be unreliable and miss a time.
The next you have to look at is whether your pet responds well to the sitter. I know that my picky dogs used to happily run up to our sitter when she came to collect the money. If you pets like the sitter than they are probably treating your pets well while you are gone. You can also judge their performance by how the pets are when you get home. A normal pet should just have basic happiness when you come home. If they’ve been left alone they will probably go crazy greeting you when you come home.
Finally, see if the sitter actually likes your pet. They should be in the business because they genuinely like animals. If they aren’t reporting problems or concerns then they probably don’t have their heart in it. They should at least have some basic comments about the time they spent with your pet.
These are just a few things you have to look out for when finding a sitter. Observing these factors should keep your pets happy while you are away. :)

GPS Options for Your Pet

1pets | What's New | Thursday, 26 June 2008

gps for petsWe talked about the latest GPS technology that will now allow you to find out where your lost pet has run off to in the previous post. Finding a lost pet is a very serious matter though and you shouldn’t just buy the first company you read about. You need to really decide what you want out of your company. There are a few more reputable ones that should be at the top of your list though.
Garmin, the company that produces GPS systems for cars, also produces a version to track your dog. This is called Astro. You will get a lot of bang for your buck with this product. You will be able to use this one system to track up to ten dogs at a time. This means you won’t need a different reader for each of your devices. The tracker itself comes in the form of a collar that you put around your pets neck. The collar will send a signal back to the receiver every five seconds. It can pinpoint their exact location through this method and it can actually estimate their activity at the time. This makes it much easier to tell if you’re chasing a running dog or if they’ve picked a nice cool spot to rest.
Another option is the Global Pet Finder. It works as a GPS collar device. This can work alongside your choice of mobile device by sending alerts about their recent movements. This one can also set up a system of virtual walls that instantly turn on the full system to report this. The device can even use a built in thermometer to tell whether they are too cold or too hot at their current location. The best part may be that you just have to dial “FOUND” on your mobile device to activate the system. This means you can be away from your home when you activate it. If they run away during a trip or a walk you can instantly track them down with the use of your phone.
You certainly have a few good alternatives when it comes to GPS devices for your pets. These two should certainly be first and foremost during your consideration though. You don’t want to be cheap when your pet’s happiness is at stake. ;)

Pets and GPS Basics

1pets | What's New | Monday, 23 June 2008

pets gpsI’m sure that one of your biggest fears is your furry little friend getting away from you. Your little buddy will fill your life with joy, but they don’t always make good decisions. It is far to easy for them to accidentally get away from you. Few pets can manage to find their way home once they enter another confusing area. If you really want to find your pet again you should plan ahead and invest in a GPS tracking device.
This technology was first developed by the military as a means of creating tactical plans during combat situations. A system of satellites receive the signal emitted by the activated tracker and then report the location of said signal back to base. This great technology has now made its way into the free market. The same technology that works to help you find your way around town can be used to track down any of your pets if they run off.
It will essentially work just like lo jack. If they run off you can contact the company and activate the little marker. You can have a tracker placed in their collar or your veterinarian can inject a little tracker under their skin during an examination. It is usually quick cost effective as well, especially considering the pain of losing your pet.
This is just a start into the world of GPS for your pets. If your pet even has the lightest chance of getting away you should at least look at your GPS options.

Online Pet Medication

1pets | All Pets | Saturday, 21 June 2008

There is one thing that pet owners all have in common. They all love their little friends and will do whatever they can to take care of them. It doesn’t matter whether you have a poodle or a parrot, you will want your pet to have the best care available. This often comes with a hefty price tag though. If you had a way to give them their same prescription medication at a cheaper price, wouldn’t you look into it?
Unfortunately pet care costs have risen right alongside human medical care. This means that giving your pet the best available will often knock a big hole in your budget. It doesn’t necessarily have to though. There are many online pharmacies that can provide you with the same prescriptions that you’d get from your vet. They are usually at a cheaper price as well. Just think about it. Most vets will charge you for a basic exam even if they just weigh your pet and write a second copy of a prescription that they already used before. If you have clearance from your vet you can use one of these online outlets to get the same medication sent to your door, saving you time as well as money.
The last advantage is that you can use their sources to inform yourself about the symptoms of the many diseases that could affect your pet. You can get a little knowledge for yourself so you don’t have to wait for your vets response to know whether they just have a cold or a full medical emergency.
The online era is here. You’d be a fool to not take advantage of it. These online pet pharmacies can offer you so much for just a little bit of your time.

Pet Grooming Tips

The costs for a professional groomer can easily add up to make a sizable cost in your monthly budget. Learning how to groom your pet yourself can lead to great savings and possibly a little bit of extra bonding time with your pet.
You do have to be very careful about going the do-it-yourself route. Your local pet stores survives by providing you with expensive toys and shampoos for your pet. There’s nothing wrong with this necessarily but it does quickly remove any cost-saving efforts on your part if you spend half your month’s budget on fancy conditioner.
There are ways to make your pet look good on a budget. One of the easiest ways is to use baby powder for a quick cleaning. You can sprinkle some into your pet’s hair, let it settle, and then brush it out to make them smell good and look cleaner without the trouble of a bath.

Another good thing to use is baking soda. It will also let you perform a dry bath that will clean out some nasty odors without much worth. Just sprinkle some in their fur and then brush it out to freshen them up. Baking soda is also a cheap way to clean out their ears.

If your pet is scratching their ears a lot then they may have mites or a light infection. A cotton ball dipped in a solution of warm water and baking soda should help clean out the ears of any cat or dog while also killing any nasty mites.
As you can see, there are many cheap ways to clean your pet and make them look beautiful too. Grooming your pet doesn’t have to be a big expense if you know what to do. ;)
