Shih Tzu is a Chinese term literally meaning Lion Dog, is a mixed breed of designer dogs. It is often called as Chrysanthemum dog because of the flower like look of its face. The name is according to the wade Giles system of Romanization and is both singular and plural.

It seems that the Shih Tzus is one of the oldest and smallest of the holy dogs and is being compared to a snow-lion coz of its lion like look. It also became on of the world’s most beloved pets in England in the early part of this century and later during the time of world war II

It has a small and sturdy build with a height of around 11 inches and weight of around 9 -16 lbs. It has a double layered thick, abundant coat of hairs underlined by a woolen coat and can be found in any color or color combination. The head is somewhat round, has sharp teeth and pendent ears. The eyes are widely set, usually dark, round and large. The legs are straight, muscular and short, the tail is curled and heavily plumed.

The average life spam of Shih Tzu is between 14 to 18 years depending upon the care. The dog is very energetic, lively, have a friendly nature and is ideal for an apartment life. Though some training is required to help build some obedience. Children will love them for sure..

Some of the breed related health problems include wheeze, atopy, corneal ulcers, eye cataract, renal and vertebal diseases.

Because of the long, dense coat, it requires a little more care than other breeds. Regular pet grooming is often required, or a short haircut eg. pet trim should avoid daily hair care. Is recognized by CKC, FCI AKC, CCR, APRI, ACR and more.. You will find lots of shih tzu clubs too.

Spotting the Parvo Virus in Your Dog

1pets | Dogs | Tuesday, 13 May 2008

The Parvo Virus is one of the worst illnesses that can strike your beloved family friend. This nasty virus will attack your dog’s digestive system and cause them to die from a very painful breakdown. The best thing you can do is have them properly immunized when possible in order to keep them protected from it. Every owner should understand the symptoms though.

You should be on high alert if your dog is vomiting a lot while also refusing to drink or eat. Diarrhea often accompanies the virus. These are fairly common digestive issues though and not necessarily indicative of the Parvo Virus. They are likely to have a serious case of it when you notice things that are very wrong and out of character for them.

This includes your dog being very thirsty but refusing to drink. They will probably cry and act as though they are thirsty while just hovering over their water bowl. In extreme cases they may collapse over it. They can also show similar behavior toward food. They can feel like they’re starving but refuse to eat.

You may also sense that they are very confused or lost inside their own home and they will probably loose control over their bowels with watery or bloody diarrhea occurring.

Noticing any of these symptoms means that they have a very serious case nearing emergency status. Take them to the veterinarian as soon as possible for them to receive basic treatment to contain the virus. A speedy reaction can make all the difference. :)

High Quality Wholesale Dog Food

1pets | Dogs, Tips | Thursday, 17 April 2008

Getting your pets the best food available can get rather expensive. It is a terrible thing to have to choose between your budget and your beloved pet’s happiness. Thankfully there are many ways for you to buy their favorite foods at a wholesale price. All it takes is a little extra effort on your part. The savings will be well worth it though.

If you are lucky then there will be a good wholesale supplier somewhere near your home. Just checking the yellow pages are asking around could answer this question. Don’t fret if you don’t have a local one though. There are many online stores that will happily provide you with quality dog food at great prices. A simple google search will churn up lists upon lists of providers. Stores like iMediPet, Pets World, Petedge, and Ifastags all provide some good starting points in your price check efforts. These companies have added a whole new level of legitimacy through their honest practices and good prices.

These websites can be a great place to look for other information though. Many of the stores keep a small library of information about common pet problems with tips on how to cure them. It is just really nice to have a one-stop-shop for your pets in the modern world. The old care and concern shown by the mom-and-pop stores has been gone for awhile now. I just think its nice that these websites are trying to make it easier for their consumers again.

Pet food is very expensive but it is something that can be bought in bulk for great savings. You just have to take the time to find the deals. The Internet has made this all much easier though. You really don’t have an excuse now. :)

Massage for Dogs

1pets | Dogs | Monday, 17 March 2008

This may sound a bit crazy. Who would have so much money that they can afford to have their pet receive a special massage? These isn’t necessarily wrong. There are some people who just do it to pamper their pets to an insane level. The truth is that massage has long been an effective way to improve the muscles of pets. Greyhound racing has been using massage to help improve performance and speed. The military and various rescue organizations have also worked massage into their campaigns as a way to help their dogs relax after work that is quite stressful.
If these various sources have put massage to good use then you should be able to put it into your dog’s life as well. Giving your dog a massage session can reduce arthritis pain and lower their blood pressure. This means that your aging animal could greatly benefit from the occasional session as a way to improve their lives. You can also usually find all of the materials you need to do this yourself. Pet stores will now carry many alternative health treatments right alongside their other supplies. If you can’t afford a professional then you can find the oils, creams, a spare book to do it yourself.
Your dog deserves the best in life. Massage should just be a new way to help them feel better.:)
